Frequently Asked Questions About the Downtown Day Camp: Where is the Downtown Day Camp? Who are the staff at the Downtown Day Camp? How well is the pool supervised? Will my child receive swimming lessons? Can children take a bus to the Downtown Day Camp? What activities do the children do at camp? Can I drop off my child before nine? Or pick up after five?
Where is the Downtown Day Camp? The Downtown Day Camp operates out of the Downtown Community Center and the Independence School (PS 234), near the corner of Chambers and Greenwich Streets in Tribeca. The Community Center has 30,000 square feet of air conditioned activity space. The facility includes a 75 foot pool, two large art rooms, a small theater, a multi media studio, a dance/activity studio, a teaching kitchen, game room, specialized age-appropriate activity rooms, and a large "Great Hall." The Downtown Day Campers will be some of the first users of this fantastic new facility. Back to top Who are the staff at the Downtown Day Camp? At the Downtown Day Camp, we are extremely proud of our camp structure and staff. Campers aren’t the only ones who love camp so much that they keep coming back for years, it has become a tradition that every year many of the staff members return to the Downtown Day Camp. Our counselors are high achieving college and high school students (many students and alumni from neighboring Stuyvesant High School). The counselors are supervised by “team leaders” who are pre-school and elementary school administrators. Back to top How does the Downtown Day Camp offer all the amenities of a suburban camp? We have incredible facilities here in New York City that other camps don't. In addition to our own Downtown Community Center, private swimming pool and PS 234 facilities, we also have permits for use of the beautiful baseball and soccer fields in Battery Park City fields and at Pier 40. Back to top How well is the pool supervised? One of the things that makes the Downtown Day Camp special is our swim program. We usually have 10 people working at our pool. There are 3 swim instructors, 3 certified lifeguards, and 3 teachers assistants—all under the supervision of the aquatics director. This is in addition to the group counselors who go in the pool with the children. Back to top Will my child receive swimming lessons? What will his/her level be? Yes. Groups go to the pool every day except trip day (kindergarten groups go twice per week). That time is divided into lessons and “free times.” The lessons consist of skills from “Water Exploration and Adjustment” to “Stroke Development and Refinement.” The free time is as important as the lessons for the children’s swimming development. It is a time when they can practice the skills they learn in the lessons. In the lessons, the swimming class is grouped by swimming ability. Each group that comes to the pool is divided into three classes based on the swimming skills they demonstrate on the first day of camp. If a child is placed in an incorrect swimming group, or makes progress faster than the rest of the class, he/she will be moved up to the next level immediately. Back to top Can children take a bus to the Downtown Day Camp? Yes. There is morning and evening transportation to and from the Downtown Day Camp for an extra fee. We have four different buses that cover different areas (see brochure, website or application for bus stops and times). There are counselors on the bus who care for the children and do not dismiss them unless there’s an adult waiting to take them off of the bus at the stop. Back to top What activities do the children do at camp? Our extensive camp program consists of indoor and outdoor activities. We have activity specialists who run everything from computers and art to song shows and karate. Our athletic director (a full-time elementary school gym teacher) and staff coordinate field sports instruction and games at the ball field. There are also group activities that the counselors organize and run, some of these are Fantasyland (our fun-filled game room), cooking, yard play, group time, etc. Back to top Is the camp a sports camp? Downtown Day Camp offers a variety of activities, including an extensive athletics program at outdoor ball fields as well as inside our gymnasium. Our athletic department, headed by an elementary school gym teacher, focuses on instruction and emphasizes fun. The Downtown Day Camp is a well-rounded program, utilizing two art rooms, computer room, movement/dance studio, auditorium, private swimming pool, and much more. We are a great camp with a full complement of special activities all rolled into one fantastic program. Back to top Can I drop off my child before nine? Or pick up after five? Yes. We offer early drop off and late pick up for an extra fee. You can drop off your child at camp between 8:00 and 9:00 AM, and/or pick up between 5:00 and 6:00 PM. General arrival time is 9 AM, and dismissal is 5 PM. Back to top |
