Learning to swim is a very important part of growing up, and is, therefore, a large part of the Downtown Day Camp experience.

Although the new Downtown Community Center's pool is crowned jewel of the building, the staff is the real strength of the Downtown Day Camp's swim program. Our great staff includes certified swimming instructors, American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards, teaching assistants, and our swim director (who holds Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Certifications, as well as American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructor Certifications). in addition to the group’s counselors, who make sure your child is safe, having fun, and learning to swim.

Children swim every day except for trip day. Lessons and free time alternate days. Lessons are taught by the three instructors, in different areas of the pool. Each swim class is, on the average, eight children–with one instructor, one instructor aide, and any of the counselors that are with the group all day long.

Free time is an integral part of the learning process and is great for the children because they have time to practice what they've learned in their lesson the day before. And for the older groups, it is a time when the group can play water games organized by our pool staff.
